News from the Herd and Fiona

September 29, 2022

September 28, 2022

And wasn’t that a blow?  I have trees down everywhere, much the same as everyone else.  I have a great crew helping.  The Bunkhouse flipped but does not appear twisted.  The crew is clearing trees so when the time comes it will be cleared to put it to rights again.   The adventure grove is a mire of trees.  The electric cable pulled away from the barn, so that awaits the electrician and Maritime Electric.  The herd was left in the pasture during the blow.  Monday and Tuesday they were brought in for assessment.  I was concern with flying debris, that did not appear to be a problem, all is well with them.  I know that other farms fared much worse than ours.  I hope they have the  same help that my barn Heroes  are giving to the Sanctuary.  It is terribly discouraging  to be so feeble, that the physical labour proves to be too much for the right knee.  It has a tendency to say NO so many times.  That being said, I am able to carry on with the help of my barn heroes,  Many folks depend upon us for their horse therapy.  And I can still provide coffee.

Dentistry was scheduled for this week, but that had to be cancelled by the Vet College.  Grateful that Ron Harris was able to come by on Friday and trim toes.  My generator gives us lights in the barn, running water and we are able to run the barn cleaner.  It does not have a large enough capacity to feed the upstairs living quarters.   Water is great to have and I have a propane stove. I am eating well and have hot liquids.

The spring in the south pasture is running well, another worry taken care of.  Tubs are full at the barn. I am still treating Art and it appears to be healing well.  We are into the 8th week of treating the wound.  This has been an amazing  journey with any wound I have worked with.  Yay!  for Witch Hazel, Yarrow, Comfrey, Plantain,  Aloe  Vero, Lavender  and seaweed.  Yup I threw every healing herb in the yard at this project.

Next on the agenda is checking the winter paddock fences.  Soon the herd will be over at the barn.  At the moment we have 5 horses at the barn paddock.  They all have some ailment or other that needs treating on a daily basis.  Melanie Saunders is my resident Equine Body Worker.  She is doing full body massage on Aero, and Bunny, they have hind end muscle issues.  I feel very strongly that her work with Art is the reason he is still standing.  She just kept massaging until the crackle was gone.  The sub-cutaneous crackle happens when a horse loses a lot of blood.  Any healing needs a good healthy blood supply.  We added Black Strap Molasses to his feed (more iron) and to his credit he did not go off his feed.  It is really hard to heal a horse when they stop eating.  I think the daily doses of Depocillin and Bute (horse aspirin) helped with the healing and any pain.

The barn heroes, Dave, Shayna, Liam, Kim, and Heidi, cleared brush and trees from the riding ring (called that even though it is square)  they cleared all the brush and trees from the Bunkhouse pad.  So we can be ready for the heroes that will lift it and return it to its former glory.   The farm truck did well today with load after load of blocks and brush.   There is so much more to do, but these heroes of mine are an inspiration for me.

Kindness is shining in PEI.  Love and hugs from Yogi and the herd. At Handibear Hills Horse Sanctuary, in South Granville.
