So sad, my summer students have finished their allotted work project with the Sanctuary. It was a great summer for me to have them, I am not asking their opinion. The herd will certainly miss all their attention. On second thought, it must have been a good thing. Kiaya and Zoe came back to volunteer, and Sue volunteered another week. Time is fleeting and yet time is endless. The geraniums, the mother plant was given to me by Evelyn McDowell in 1990, it came from Boston sometime in the 1920’s and passed to her by her mother. I slip it every year to put in all the planters. It has been exuberant in its growth this year, the drought suited. It is a desert plant and loved the heat. And of course it is old tradition to have the geraniums beside the door to repel the flies. I made a mistake. In my last misal I wrote about long saddles that are too long for the back of the horse. I used the word fender and should have named the “skirt” that is too long for the back.
Tuesday the storm was fierce with a lot of thunder and lightning, but not enough rain to make a difference in my pastures. There is more rain coming up the eastern seaboard, lovely!! but I could do without the wind.
I got a call today about a horse that is suffering from benign neglect. He is not getting much attention so he is being difficult. And then he may be a difficult horse because he is not getting attention. It could be nutrition, I believe because our soils are so dead, there is very little vitamins or minerals in our forage. In my opinion it is absolutely necessary to supply any diet with a good supplement. To be absolutely sure, it is a good idea to test the forage and be sure of the vitamins and minerals needed to balance the ration.
