News from the Herd

December 27, 2021

December 27, 2021

We are coming to the end of the year.   I am hoping for everyone a new and prosperous year ahead.  Of course the year end for me means accounting.  CRA is waiting.    I am a registered non profit (NGO) Sanctuary.  Mostly in the red, but I still have to give an accounting to the government.  Financially it is tough running a farm on the Pension. I have devoted all my finances to the health and welfare of the herd as best I could. I would like to thank everyone that gives  all year round. I look after the horses, you have looked after me. I have been gifted with fruit, veggies, bread, eggs, fish, clams and beef, and clothes to keep me presentable. I have no farm machinery so I depend up contractors for plumbing, electrical,  mowing the fields, provide the hay, move the hay, spread the manure, blow snow, cut trees, .  They have always been generous of spirit in billing me lightly.

There is a transition team working to finance the farm, when my money is not available.  In December they began a funding drive.  I do not have charitable status, to give receipts for tax purposes.  So I know that folks that have donated truly love the horses and what we do for the community, they have big hearts and I thank each and every one of you.  There are many NGO’s in our community doing great work, please support them too.

December was a wicked month for horsekeeping.  Wet and so much miserable wind.   Because of health issues it is better for the herd to be outside 24/7.  They have lots of shelter from all the winds except the east wind.  Water is always the issue, when the winds are high they do not come to the water tub that is at the barn.  They have been in the stable more nights than I can remember ever before.   My rule of thumb has been the winds at the bridge.  When the bridge is closed, the herd is in.  December  was the month for South East and North East winds.

The high winds on the hill has pretty well wiped out my roof shingles.  It has been a few years of continual patching.  There is a battered tarp  keeping out the wet.   I do envelope saving, and the envelope for the roof has been ready for quite a while waiting for my contractor (weather hasn’t made his job easy either).  Super things happened this week.  The Blue steel is in the yard, the lift machine arrived today and word is, the strapping will arrive this week too.   All is well.   Wishing you prosperity in the coming year.

Be kind to one another.  Love and hugs from Yogi and the herd.
