News from the Herd

September 1, 2021

September 1, 2021

I ask you, where does the time fly?  And why does it fly so fast.  We have come to the end of our summer programs.  Sunday past  I did not put out a request for “Smalls” Sunday volunteers. I said to Maxine “We can engage the parents”  That was a bad plan, it is summer and everyone was wearing sandals. Open toes are not allowed around the horses!!.   Not to worry, Smalls shared their talents and took turns leading. Maxine has made them so confident with their skills.  Labour day weekend is our day of rest.  The “Smalls” will continue  the following  Sunday 2-4pm.   Ages 6 -9 years.

The Bunkhouse  paint is dry, it has been tidied  in preparation for occupants Wednesday night.  For Trailblazers last night it  will be a bonfire, a bit of karaoke on a stage built by themselves, followed by some sleep in the bunkhouse??   Pancakes and blueberries in the morning.   During the school year, Trailblazers will be held on Saturdays .

Last month we were doing a favour for our neighbour’s horse.  We offered to strengthen muscles.  The Sanctuary Hills are perfect for conditioning.  It has been recorded, that horses will travel 10 miles a day if they have the space. Our herd has 50 acres of hills to cover.  Once  Beau passed quarantine time we introduce some of the herd to him at the barn and then we introduced him to the herd. You just have to introduce one new horse to the herd and the dynamics change. Friendship is a myth. We now  go to the field  with healing ointments.  It isn’t the new horse that is being battered. It is those that want to be his friend and the Alpha’s are not allowing that to happen.

It appeared that things had settled in the pasture, until we got a call that Pytor pony was next door at the neighbours.  Three of us walked the fence line to no avail.  We could not find the spot that where he left the field.  We do have a gate post that needs replacing, the  Zap is compromised with downed wires.  That being the  case, the pony probably would not respect the fence if it  did not have a good zap to it.   Until we can remedy the fence, Pytor is  remaining  at the barn paddock with Gracie the mini.

Of course you have all heard about the Ivermectin shortage in the states.  It appears that people are using the animal product as a cure for Covid.  Canadians have to be smarter than that.  Fall deworming is soon to be.  After the hard frost, I deworm the herd to  remove the Bot larva, along with the other hateful parasites.  I use an Ivomect product.  I guess I had better get to my supplier soon in case they cannot order in supplies.

On a personal note, I have a letter of consideration from the  Housing Dept.  The program is supposed to help us old folks stay in our homes.  I applied for a walk in tub (I just have a shower) and a lift (I have a ladder)  to get to my loft.   My problem.  I have not been able to get the required 2 quotes, not even one quote.  And the deadline is looming.  It appears that for a dozen reasons contractors do not want to deal with this program or the department.  It would be a wonderful thing to be able to soak these old bones this winter, and be able work in my loft as well.   Asking if there is any help out there for the old bear.

Tough Covid times, Be kind!!  Love and hugs from Yogi and the Herd.
